Building Regional Innovation Ecosystems (BRIE)

The Dorf- & Stadterneuerung is partnering on a cross-border project to support municipalities in the Austria-Slovakia border region with digitalization.

Building Regional Innovation Ecosystems (BRIE) is an Interreg SK-AT project designed to strengthen innovation within public administration at the regional and municipal level in the Austrian–Slovak border region. Implemented under Interreg Priority 4, Specific Objective 4.1 (“Enhancing the effectiveness of public administration”), the project aims to improve institutional cooperation and support the efficient delivery of public services.

BRIE promotes innovation in three complementary dimensions:

  1. Generating innovation: Through the Cross Border Innovation Lab, regional and municipal challenges are addressed by developing new ideas and co-designed solutions.
  2. Using innovation: Municipalities are supported in building the capabilities needed to introduce (digital) innovations. This includes developing a consulting approach for municipal digitalisation strategies and producing a practical guide for implementing energy accounting.
  3. Implementing innovation: A technological innovation—a prototype of a Digital Twin for public administration—is developed and piloted in a regional authority in Slovakia.

The project targets local and regional public administrations as well as intermediary organisations working in regional development and municipal support. While the general public is not the direct target group, BRIE ultimately contributes to better public services and addresses key societal challenges through strengthened cross-border cooperation and improved administrative capacity.
